Alberta readies challenge to national securities regulator

The Alberta government is planning a court challenge to fight the federal government’s plans for a national securities regulator. Canada’s trading partners have long complained that it’s needlessly complicated to deal with 13 separate provincial bodies that set rules for publicly traded companies. But Alberta and Quebec say they need their own agencies to protect their business interests and to stop encroachment from the federal government. “In a phrase, we would relinquish a constitutional right, gaining nothing for it,” Evans says. “No matter what the assurances, we believe you cannot, on behalf of your people, surrender a constitutional right and responsibility so easily.”
