With chief executive compensation in the public spotlight in recent years, corporations are choosing transparency when it comes to executive pay structures, human resources consultants say. Now more than ever, shareholders are asking tough questions, and voting on what they feel is reasonable, which has put compensation under the microscope, regardless of rank. “It’s increasing transparency,” says David Payne, a senior human resources consultant with the Hay Group in Calgary. “There’s no board or HR compensation committee that wants to be embarrassed by a low vote. They want to be seen to be doing the right thing and I’d say the vast majority do the right thing.”
