Alberta loses 15,000 jobs

Alberta’s job market recovery lasted all of one month… “Since the recession has begun, for professional and technical services, we’ve lost a lot,” said Larry Brownoff [CA], an Edmonton-based senior recruiting manager at staffing firm Robert Half International. “A lot of what was driving the economy in Alberta was major oil and gas projects. They have to be designed and engineered… and there’s accounting people who develop budgets for those projects and track the costs and legal people that deal with the contracts.” But he’s noticed signs of life lately in the job market. “On the finance and accounting side of things as well as the technical services and office administrative, we’ve seen a little bit of a pickup in hiring over the past three months. We’ve seen a lot of companies that have been in hibernation and now hiring new staff or hiring to backfill roles where they’ve laid people off.”…
