Albertans No. 1 in personal bankruptcy; Number of new cases for May up 34 per cent nationwide—but 86 percent here

Albertans continue to file for personal bankruptcy at an alarming rate as the recession affects their ability to pay their bills… “People bought big houses during the boom when interest rates were low, and if their hours have been cut or they’ve lost their jobs they can’t afford their payments,” said Zaki Alam [CA], senior insolvency vice president at Meyers Norris Penny in Edmonton. “It’s also people living on the edge with credit card debt, and it’s caught up with them.”…
