Newest Oiler kicks out the jams from high atop Rexall

Twenty-nine years after his first Edmonton Oilers tryout, Gordon Graschuk [CA] finally cracked the lineup. The 50-year-old made his big league debut in Sunday’s 2-1 shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Pengiuns, where, as starting organist, he punched out Freeze Frame, the 1982 J. Geils Band’s hit, on a new Kawai CP179. That song was being etched into hot vinyl when Graschuk first tried out as organist. The Oilers roster featured names like Coffey, Kurri, and Gretzky. Enthusiasm for the medieval instrument waned about five years later, but it’s a gig Graschuk always coveted and tried out for in the early 1980s. “I’ve been waiting for a long time for another shot at it,” he said. “It’s one of those things, when you’re a keyboard player, you want to be that guy. It’s just a cool thing to be a part of the game day experience.”… Apart from sitting in a booth, it’s all a far cry from Graschuk’s other life as a chartered accountant. He keeps an eye on a monitor and wears a headphone over one ear, listening as orders are barked to ensure the scoreboard screen, cameras, DJ, promotions and announcements are all in sync.
