Member Application - become an Alberta CA

There are two general categories of CA Membership applicants

  • New Chartered Accountant – individuals who are new to the CA profession in Canada, including recent UFE Grads and Foreign Candidates who have passed the CA Reciprocity Exam (CARE). You may apply online (see below) or you may complete and submit the Member Registration Initial application
  • Affiliate Chartered Accountant – individuals who currently hold CA membership in another Canadian provincial Institute. You may apply online (see below) or you may complete and submit the Member Registration by Affiliation application

Continuing Professional Development

All ICAA members are required to report their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) compliance prior to March 1st every year. As a member of the ICAA, you may complete and submit the 2011 CPD Declaration in hard copy – submission by fax, email or post is acceptable; alternatively, you may make your CPD Declaration online (see below) through your secure member portal. Change Your Address - Members

On occasion a member may need to provide written confirmation of their CA designation to another person or organization (for example, a potential employer, immigration or others) – we can help. Complete the Registration Address Name Change form and fax or email it to the Registrations team at registrations@icaa.ab.ca – we’ll do the rest!

Confirm Your CA Designation

On occasion a member may need to provide written confirmation of their CA designation to another person or organization (for example, a potential employer, immigration or others) – we can help. Complete the Registration Registration Verification and fax or email it to the Registrations team at registrations@icaa.ab.ca – we’ll do the rest!

Fee Reduction

A member whose active business or employment earnings is less than $30,000 annually, may be eligible for a reduction in their CA membership fees. The member should apply for the fee reduction at the time of making annual renewal (April each year) – however, on occasion the member’s situation changes mid-year and the fee reduction wasn’t considered in April. Submission of the Fee Reduction Request form will provide ICAA with information used to change your billing status and retroactively consider a fee reduction. Please fax or email the form to registrations@icaa.ab.ca.

Resign - Alberta CA

A member is permitted to resign their CA membership with the ICAA if they meet the following criteria:

  • You are not in arrears for fees, costs, fines or penalties; and
  • You advise the ICAA Registrar in writing that you intend to resign; and
  • You return your membership certificate to the ICAA. If you have lost your certificate or it has been accidently destroyed you must provide a notarized affidavit of loss. Download the affidavit: Certificate - Declaration of Loss

Use of Title - CPA

In Alberta, the use of the title “Certified Public Accountant” or initials “CPA” is restricted under the Regulated Accountant Professions Act. To apply for use of CPA in Alberta please complete and submit the Application for use of CPA Title

Registrants Administering Trust Funds

A registrant (including a CA or a Public Accounting Firm) who administers Trust Funds or Fees in Advance in excess of $10,000 must make an annual submission to ICAA. Click here for the required form. Annual Filing for Registrants Administering Trust Funds or Fees in Advance over $10,000

Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreeement (TILMA)

On April 1, 2009, the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) came into effect. The TILMA states that any worker certified for an occupation by a regulatory authority of BC or Alberta shall be recognized as qualified to practice that occupation by the other province.

Under the TILMA, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA) will recognize any worker who is currently certified as a Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia as qualified to practice as a Chartered Accountant in Alberta.

The application requirements for a British Columbia Chartered Accountant coming to Alberta are:
1. Completion of the application form including
a. Declaration of good character
b. References
c. Statutory declaration of professional knowledge and conduct
d. Member fee
2. Proof of good standing with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia
