2012 Tax Clinic Program

Through this valuable program, CA volunteers help low-income Albertans complete their tax returns free of charge. The clinics are in Edmonton, Calgary and surrounding communities, and run from March to the beginning of April in co-operation with seniors' homes, community centres, and other not-for-profit agencies.

In 2011, over 270 CAs, CA students and other professionals prepared over 2,100 income tax returns for those in need.

Tax Clinic Program Highlights

The 2012 Tax Clinics run March 6 to April 19, 2012. Both CAs and CA students are invited to volunteer. Please note that a CA must be present to supervise any student volunteers at a clinic.

  • Returns are Fairly Simple
The returns completed at our tax clinics are generally quite simple. The clients have low income, no rental properties and no business income. In most cases, there is no tax payable, but the individual needs to file a return in order to be eligible for refundable tax credits, the GST credit and other tax benefits.
  • Institute Assistance
To assist volunteers in dealing with the most common situations, guidelines and sample returns will be posted on the Institute website. The Institute will also hold an orientation session in Edmonton and Calgary in February, to brief CAs and CA students on preparing these kinds of tax returns. Please note that the training sessions held for volunteers will generally qualify as verifiable CPD, as long as new learning is occurring.
  • Tax Software
Thanks to Intuit, our corporate partner for the Tax Clinics, our volunteers will receive a copy of ProFile tax software for use at the CA Tax Clinics.
  • 2012 CA Tax Clinic Challenge
Challenge another CA firm or organization to see who can prepare the most returns. Let us know and we will post your success stories on our website. Click here fore more information.
  • Co-op Students and University Accounting Students
Co-op Students and University Accounting Students may be eligible to volunteer to prepare tax returns at the tax clinics as long as they have completed a university level personal tax course; have previous experience completing personal tax returns; have attended a CA Tax Clinic training session (as noted above); and have a qualified CA from to accompany them at a Tax Clinic.
