CA Outlook - Summer 2011

Blair Nixon QC, FCA to be named ICAA President

Blair Nixon QC, FCA

Blair Nixon QC, FCA will be named the 2011/12 ICAA President in June.

On June 24, the ICAA will name Blair Nixon QC, FCA as its 2011/12 Council President.

“It will be a tremendous honour to be named President of such an important organization. I am looking forward to interacting with the Government of Alberta, our province’s business leaders, post-secondary stakeholders and, of course, our 10,000 Alberta Chartered Accountants,” says Blair, Chief Financial Officer of Walton Global Investments Inc. in Calgary. “I also would like to thank Daryl Ritchie FCA, the ICAA’s outgoing President, for a job well done. Over the past 12 months he has provided a great service to the ICAA membership and to the Province of Alberta.”

The ICAA Council, consisting of nine members of the CA profession and three public representatives, is responsible for fulfilling the mandate set out in the Regulated Accounting Profession Act. All regulations, bylaws, Council resolutions, rules of professional conduct and related guidelines are passed in accordance with this regulation. Council is also responsible for setting the strategic direction of the CA profession in Alberta, and is committed to serving the interests of the public and the profession.

Blair will be named President at the ICAA’s annual general meeting. The AGM is part of the Institute’s annual Celebrating Alberta CAs event, which also includes the Merit Awards Gala, where Alberta CAs and business leaders will be recognized for their contributions to the CA profession and their communities.

Canadian CAs and CMAs discuss potential of merger

In May, the national leadership of the CA and CMA professions in Canada announced that they are exploring the option of developing a proposal for the two designations to merge. The first step in the process is for both parties to consult with their respective memberships to determine what the opportunities and issues are around the merger concept.

In Alberta, the ICAA is hosting a series of town hall meetings across the province in June in order to hear the perspectives of Alberta CAs on the merger concept. “The primary purpose of the town hall sessions is for members of the ICAA Council to listen to the membership and find out where they stand on the merger question,” said ICAA CEO Jane Halford. “Council has not voted, nor taken a position, on whether a merger is a good idea or not. Right now, Council’s role in this process is to hear what Alberta CAs have to say, and pass that input on to the national leadership. Similar processes are occurring across Canada over the next several weeks.”

Based on the input from across Canada, the CICA (Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants) may engage with CMA Canada in negotiations in the fall. If a merger proposal emerges from those negotiations, that proposal will be taken to CAs and CMAs across Canada, as well as to provincial governments to discuss any required legislative changes.

You can find out more about the merger concept and the rationale for it by visiting the ICAA website at the following link: http://www.albertacas.ca/Resources/

CAEF's Paying it Forward campaign picking up steam

Paying it Forward

The CAEF recently received a Community Spriit Grant from the Government of Alberta to support its Paying it Forward youth financial literacy project.

Provincial government grant supports CA Education Foundation’s youth financial literacy project

The Chartered Accountants Education Foundation of Alberta (CAEF) has received funding from the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Culture and Community Spirit for its youth financial literacy project. The government grant, distributed through the Community Spirit Program, will be utilized to support the development of financial literacy resources for junior and senior high school students in Alberta. The project aims to make a broad impact inside and outside of the classroom, reaching youth throughout Alberta and providing key information and tools that will empower them to make smart financial decisions and plan for sound financial futures.

“We are very pleased to receive this funding from the government and thank the Ministry for its support,” says the CAEF’s Executive Director, Jane Halford CA. “There is a pressing need for enhanced financial literacy education, particularly among young people. This grant will assist the Foundation’s work in connecting Alberta youth to valuable personal money management resources.”

The CAEF’s mandate is to support business education in Alberta and the financial literacy for youth project helps to achieve this by equipping the next generation of leaders with the know-how to navigate through life’s financial complexities. “Financial literacy skills are foundational for life and for business,” said Steve Allan FCA, CA·CIRP, Honourary Chair of the CAEF’s Paying it Forward fundraising campaign, which aims to raise funds to support the youth financial literacy project. “Alberta CAs have the expertise to positively affect the financial knowledge of those following in our footsteps – the province’s future community and business leaders.”

The CAEF is set to tee off on September 13

Playing it Forward

The CAEF's Playing it Forward golf tournament, running September 13 in Calgary, will raise money for the Foundation's Paying it Forward campaign.

The Chartered Accountants Education Foundation of Alberta (CAEF) is teeing off in support of its current campaign, Paying It Forward. Launched in September 2010 at the ICAA Centennial Spur-tacular event, the Paying It Forward campaign aims to raise dollars to fund projects that give Alberta’s youth the tools they need to be financially responsible as adults.

The Playing It Forward golf tournament will be held on September 13, 2011 at the McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary. The event promises a day of golf and fellowship with colleagues and friends. Each ticket purchase includes 18 holes of golf, Alberta beef dinner, silent auction and a chance to win great prizes.

ICAA sponsors Alberta Junior Achievers

JA Verve Symposium

Fifty Junior Achievement of Northen Alberta students travelled to Saskatchewan to attend the second annual Verve Symposium. The trip was sponsored by the ICAA and Ian McDonald FCA.

For many years the ICAA has been a proud support of Junior Achievement in Alberta. In late May that support crossed provincial boundaries, as the ICAA sponsored 50 Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta students to travel to Saskatoon and attend the second annual Verve Symposium of Young Innovators & Entrepreneurs. A special thank you goes out to Ian McDonald FCA, who also contributed to the project.

The busload of Alberta Achievers spent May 27-29 working through an entrepreneurial strategy challenge, during which they researched, developed and prepared a presentation to judges.

Many of Alberta’s CAs participated in Junior Achievement programs in their youth and remain connected to the organization through volunteering and other types of support.
