ICAA celebrates 2010 Centennial in style

The ICAA celebrated its 60th anniversary in 1970
The ICAA celebrates its 60th anniversary in 1970. Lorne Baxter FCA is cutting the cake, with Alberta Premier Ernest Manning and CICA president Lance Smith standing behind the numbers.

This year marks a special milestone for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA)—its 100th anniversary. While the Institute is celebrating its centennial throughout 2010, the highlight of the year’s festivities will occur from June 9 to 12 at the beautiful Jasper Park Lodge.

Headlining the festivities is the 2010 Merit Awards Gala, where over 30 award recipients will be honoured for their contributions to the CA profession and to their communities. Harry Schaefer fca and Hugh Bolton fca will be receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards, one of the most prestigious honours the ICAA bestows. As well, Al O’Brien will be presented with an Honourary CA award—only the third time in the ICAA’s 100-year history that this award has been granted.

Jasper will also be the site for the ICAA’s Annual General Meeting, at which Daryl Ritchie fca will formally assume the role of the Institute’s 2010/11 President. In addition to the Merit Awards and AGM, other activities include a charity golf tournament (supporting STARS), a Centennial Gala, an academic symposium co-hosted by the University of Alberta, continuing professional development sessions for Alberta CAs, family canoe races, and more.

2009/10 Annual Review: A Year of Achievement and Celebration

Be on the lookout for the ICAA’s 2009/10 Annual Review publication, which will be published and distributed at the end of June. It will feature articles about the ICAA’s significant programs and achievements during the past year as well as articles about the accomplishments of Alberta’s CAs and other significant contributors to the CA profession. 2,500 copies of the publication will be distributed to external stakeholders, including government, post-secondary, and business community contacts.

The ICAA’s publication of an Annual Review started in 2009. Designed as a companion piece to the conventional annual report, it provides insight and information into the work of the ICAA and its goal of protecting the public and representing the CA profession.

The new edition of the ICAA Annual Review will be available online upon its release.

Distinguished Business Leader Award

Congratulations are in order for Harold Kvisle, President and CEO of TransCanada Corporation, for being named the recipient of the 2010 Distinguished Business Leader Award (DBLA). The ICAA was a proud sponsor of the DBLA Gala this year, which took place on May 20 at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

Awarded annually by the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, this award recognizes outstanding leaders in the Calgary business community who have demonstrated exceptional vision and leadership, sound business sense and commitment to the community. This is the 18th year the award has been presented.

Previous recipients include Harley Hotchkiss (2006, Chairman, NHL Board of Governors), Charlie Fischer (2004, President & CEO, Nexen Inc.), Brian MacNeill FCA (2000, Chairman, Petro-Canada), and Richard Haskayne OC FCA (1997, Chairman, NOVA Corporation), among others.

Chartered Accountants of Alberta Room: Haskayne School of Business

Room 288 at the University of Calgary Haskayne School of Business’s Scurfield Hall will soon have a new look—and a new name. The ICAA and the University of Calgary have reached a 10-year agreement to rename SH288 the “Chartered Accountants of Alberta Room.” The room has undergone a complete renovation and modernization and should be opening up under the new name before the 2010/11 school year begins.

The Chartered Accountants of Alberta Room is a tribute to the many CAs and business leaders who have experienced the university’s outstanding calibre of education. It also commemorates the Alberta CA profession’s centennial year.

ICAA dedicated to the success of internationally trained accountants

Speaking English for Success in the Workplace
Pictured above is instructor Karen Bradley, and the inaugural 13 students in the ICAA's Speaking English for Success in the Workplace.

The ICAA is focusing on providing internationally trained accountants with tools that will enhance their success in the workplace . The Institute recently launched one of two new courses targeting accounting professionals and students whose first language is not English. The first course, Speaking English for Success in the Workplace, was launched at Edmonton’s University of Lethbridge campus on May 12 , while the second, Writing English for Success in the Workplace, will commence July 7. The program launch was funded in part by a Government of Alberta Foreign Qualification Recognition Innovation Fund grant.

Each course consists of eight weekly three-hour evening sessions and targets the specific communication needs of accountants. Course content was developed by Language Education for Accounting Professionals (LEAP), an organization founded by a Chartered Accountant and first generation Chinese Canadian. The ICAA is dedicated to growing the CA profession and assisting internationally trained accountants in their transition to the Canadian business world. These courses are expected to launch in Calgary in the Fall of 2010.
