Playing it Forward

The CAEF's Playing it Forward golf tournament will be taking place at Calgary's McKenzie Meadows Golf Club on September 13.

The Chartered Accountants Education Foundation of Alberta (CAEF) believes that an individual’s future success begins with a solid grounding in personal money management. To help young Albertans learn the basics of money management, the CAEF has launched Paying It Forward—a campaign to raise the funds needed for projects that will help young Albertans gain the knowledge and confidence they need to maneuver successfully through today’s money maze. In support of the Paying It Forward campaign, the CAEF is holding a golf tournament, Playing It Forward, and we need your help in order to make it a success.

ICAA launches new Employment Opportunities website

The ICAA has launched a new Employment Opportunities webpage to better serve CAs and CA students from Alberta and across Canada—as well as new and arriving Canadians and those training abroad—who are seeking employment.

“This is a huge step forward for our website, and, in turn, it will help foreign-educated accountants and other employment seekers take a similar step forward in their careers,” says Jane Halford ca, CEO & Executive Director of the ICAA. “I envision this webpage as a one-stop shop for current and future CAs looking for employment in Alberta.”

The creation of this free service was funded by a grant from the Government of Alberta’s Foreign Qualification Recognition Innovation Fund.

New CA Training Offices now onboard

The ICAA would like to congratulate the following organizations on recently being approved as CA Training Offices: Alberta Health Services, Deloitte (Enterprise Risk), Husky Energy, KPMG (Tax), MNP (Tax), and University of Calgary. They join other Alberta organizations already training CA students in the corporate or public sector. A complete list of these CA Training Offices is available at www.catrainingoffice.ca

To learn more about CA training opportunities, please contact Carly Roemer ca, Manager, CA Training Office Program at c.roemer@icaa.ab.ca.

ICAA accepting registrants for "Expanding your Communications Skills in the Canadian Business Culture"

The ICAA has opened registration for the Edmonton and Calgary offerings of “Expanding your Communications Skills in the Canadian Business Culture (Writing)” course. This course is designed for CA students, other accounting students and accountants whose first language is not English. It provides the opportunity for students to practice their English writing skills in a supportive environment while learning the basics of Canadian business culture. Seminar content was developed specifically for people in accounting by Language Education for Accounting Professionals (LEAP), a firm specializing in language training for accounting professionals.

This course will be followed with “Expanding your Communications Skills in the Canadian Business Culture (speaking)” in the spring of 2012. The ICAA would like to thank both the Government of Alberta’s Foreign Qualification Recognition Innovation Fund and Community Spirit Grant Program for support in launching these programs.

Each course includes eight three-hour sessions, starting on October 18. For more information, please email m.education@icaa.ab.ca, or call 1-800-232-9406 or 780-424-7391.

CAEF Academic Conference

This past June, the Chartered Accountants Education Foundation of Alberta (CAEF) held its second-ever academic conference—an event designed to bring together Alberta and Saskatchewan’s post-secondary accounting educators with leaders and experts from the CA profession. “Alberta and Saskatchewan are fortunate to benefit from having incredibly gifted educators at our post-secondary institutions, and the CAEF thinks it’s vitally important to stay connected with these educators, who are shaping the CAs of the future,” says Bob Twerdun ca, Chair of the CAEF Board of Governors.

Held in Red Deer, the full day program included various sessions, a panel discussion and a keynote presentation from Marianne Gobeil of Leader Communications Inc. “We were very pleased with how the 2011 conference unfolded,” says Bob. “At the same time, we encourage educators to give us their feedback and ideas on how to make future conferences even better. The CAEF is committed to continuing these conferences annually because they provide educators and us with the perfect setting to stay connected and to learn about what our ‘two worlds’ have in common.”

During the conference, some of the 2010 CAEF Teaching Prize recipients were also recognized. The recipients are as follows: Lynn Sugden fcma (Grant MacEwan University), Joan Barlow ca and Valerie Kinnear ca (Mount Royal University), Carole Middleton ca (NAIT), Loretta Amerongen fca (University of Alberta), Stuart Jones ca (University of Calgary), and Allison Gerhardt ca and Douglas Kalesnikoff ca•ifa (University of Saskatchewan)

The next CAEF Accounting Academics Conference will be held in 2012.
