New CA Training Offices enter the fold

The ICAA would like to congratulate four new organizations on being approved as CA Training Offices (CATOs): Alberta Education, Deloitte (Edmonton, tax stream), KWB LLP (tax stream), and the University of Alberta. They join several Alberta organizations now training CA students in the corporate or government sector. A complete list of these CATOs is available at www.CATOadvantage.ca.

To learn more about the new CA training opportunities, please contact James Filice CA, Manager, CA Training Program, at j.filice@icaa.ab.ca.

CA Bridging Program launches at the University of Lethbridge

Obtaining the required courses to enter the CA School of Business (CASB) has typically been a challenge for students with a non-accounting degree—until now. Degree holders from all disciplines can now access the CA profession through the creation of the CA Bridging Program.

In partnership with the University of Lethbridge, the Bridging Program enables degree holders to obtain the business and accounting prerequisite courses for admission into CASB. Through the program, students will only need to complete the courses they are missing without having to enrol in a degree program. Additionally, these classes take place on weekends and evenings, meaning students can maintain full-time employment throughout the duration of their studies.

The Bridging Program launched at U of L’s Edmonton campus in May 2010 and will launch in Calgary in 2011. For more information, please visit www.cabridging.ca.

ICAA honours its Merit Award recipients

Al O'Brien
Al O'Brien, former Deputy Provincial Treasurer with the Government of Alberta, has been named an Honorary Member of the Alberta CA Profession. He previously served as a public member on the ICAA's governing council (2002-05).

This past June over 30 CAs and CA supporters were celebrated for their community and professional achievements. At the Merit Awards, hosted as part of the ICAA’s Centennial celebrations in Jasper, Al O’Brien—who retired as the Government of Alberta's Deputy Provincial Treasurer in 1999—was named an Honorary Member of the Alberta CA Profession. Mr. O’Brien was honoured for, among other reasons, his service to the ICAA as a public member of its governing council (2002-05) and his contributions to the national Public Sector Accounting and Auditing Committee (later renamed the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board).

Hugh Bolton FCA and Harry Schaefer FCA were honoured as recipients of the Alberta CA Profession’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Bolton is chair of the Board of Directors of EPCOR, and has served on the boards of TD Bank, CN Rail, Teck Cominco and WestJet. Mr. Schaefer is former CFO and Board Chair of TransAlta Utilities Corporations, and has served as Chair of the Alberta Chapter of the Institute of Corporate Directors and as a member of the Province of Alberta Audit Committee.

The ICAA is currently accepting nominations for the 2011 Merit Awards. The deadline for nominations is October 31, 2010.

Don Wilson CA Memorial Scholarship established by Stantec, CAEF

Don Wilson CA
The Don Wilson CA Memorial Scholarship has been established by Stantec and the CAEF.

The Chartered Accountants Education Foundation of Alberta (CAEF) lost a friend and supporter in Don Wilson CA, when he passed away in January 2010. Mr. Wilson served on the CAEF Board of Governors from 2005 until 2009.

“As a board member, Don could be relied upon for giving everything to make each endeavour of the Foundation a success. He was passionate about education and about creating opportunity for young Albertans. As a CA, he was a model of success and true professionalism,” says Jane Halford CA, Executive Director of the CAEF. “His passing was felt throughout the profession and he is deeply missed by everyone who knew him.”

Don’s dedication to education will continue on through a unique new scholarship. After Don’s passing, his long-time employer, Stantec, approached the CAEF to see how they could recognize their former CFO and preserve his legacy through the Foundation. With support from Stantec and Mr. Wilson’s family, friends and colleagues, the CAEF established a memorial fund in his name to support future business and accounting professionals. The Don Wilson CA Memorial Scholarship supports university students who are completing a degree in accounting and continuing their professional development towards the Chartered Accountant designation.

“Throughout his career, Don considered it an honour and duty to share his knowledge and experience, to mentor, and to give back to the community,” said Dan Lefaivre, Stantec’s chief financial officer. “We are proud to continue his legacy by helping the CAEF continue to support and strengthen the accounting profession.”

Alberta's Business Person of the Year

The Chartered Accountants of Alberta are proud to once again partner with Alberta Venture in presenting the Alberta Business Person of the Year Award. In celebration of its 2010 centennial, the CA profession is the exclusive sponsor of the award this year, which is fitting because the award recognizes and celebrates outstanding business leadership in the province. For 100 years, the CA profession has been protecting the public, providing accounting and business excellence, and adding value to Alberta’s communities.

Nominations for the 2010 Alberta Business Person of the Year are now being accepted. Nominate a senior executive who exemplifies business savvy, leadership, innovation, passion, and commitment to their community. The nomination deadline is September 7, 2010.

The nominee selected as the 2010 Alberta Business Person of the Year will be acknowledged for his/her achievements in an editorial spread in the December 2010 issue of Alberta Venture and at an award luncheon attended by distinguished members of Alberta’s business community.
