Chartered Accountants are adept at handling complex financial issues—mergers, insolvency, corporate taxes, and so on. But for many young Albertans, “financial literacy” means something different. Today’s youth have to deal with a maze of credit card offers, loans, and banking options. This maze of risk and opportunity did not exist when I was growing up. As a father, I have seen how convoluted the world of personal money management can be for young people. With a solid understanding of the basics of personal money management, youth are able to tackle major milestones, like paying for post-secondary education or buying their first car, with confidence. By completing the proposed initiatives of the Paying it Forward campaign—including an educational website, teaching modules for Alberta educators, multimedia tools, and school presentations by volunteer CAs—we can make a difference. We, as Chartered Accountants, have the expertise to positively affect the financial knowledge of those following in our footsteps. I’m excited to “pay it forward.” Throughout the campaign, there will be many opportunities for you to get involved. Keep checking this website for more information as the campaign progresses. I hope you all share in my enthusiasm and help us achieve our goals. Sincerely, Steve Allan FCA, CA•CIRP
