Welcome to the second issue of the Chartered Accountants Education Foundation of Alberta’s (CAEF) e-newsletter. This publication provides updates to supporters of the Foundation and highlights the individuals and organizations that benefit directly from their contributions.
The Board of Governors is excited to be initiating and enhancing valuable programs that make significant, positive contributions to meeting the present and future needs of the Alberta CA profession. As Chair, I have the opportunity to see, first-hand, how the Foundation advances the CA profession and greatly impacts the business and accounting landscape in Alberta.
Through the contribution of every Alberta CA, and additional generous donations, the Foundation provides:
funding to post-secondary institutions;
PhD support funding to qualified individuals interested in pursuing their PhD in accounting;
teaching prizes to exceptional post-secondary educators;
annual scholarships, awards and bursaries to business/accounting students at post-secondary institutions in Alberta and at the University of Saskatchewan, high schools and the CA School of Business; and,
funding for special projects that advance accounting education and raise the profile of the CA profession.
Since the first issue of CAEF Effect, the Foundation has been busy with a number of different initiatives. In this issue I am excited to share some of the details with you.
On behalf of the Board, thank you to all of our generous donors for your contributions. We continue to see the positive effects of your support each and every day.

CAEF Forward Thinkers initiative, in support of Paying It Forward, wrapped up on March 31.
The latest special project of the Foundation, Paying it Forward, was launched in September 2010 with the goal of raising $250,000 over a two-year period. The campaign will fund projects that will help to create a new, money-smart generation of young Albertans. The projects will provide dynamic, interactive volunteer opportunities for CAs to share their financial expertise with Alberta students.
The end of March 2012 marked the deadline for individuals to become recognized members of the CAEF’s Forward Thinkers Club, the latest Paying It Forward campaign initiative. Anyone who donated $100 or more to Paying It Forward between October 2011 and March 31, 2012 is receiving a special pin, certificate and recognition as an official CAEF Forward Thinker.
“Thanks to the generosity of Alberta CAs and other supporters, the Foundation is well on its way to reaching its fundraising goal,” says Executive Director, Jane Halford FCA. “We have generated more than half of the funds needed, but we aren’t finished yet. September 2012 – our target date to reach the fundraising goal – is approaching and we will continue to engage Alberta CAs and the business community in an effort to successfully reach our goal for this important initiative.”
In the past year and a half, the Foundation has embarked on a variety of initiatives aimed at raising funds for the youth financial literacy project. In March 2011, the Foundation launched a friendly challenge that encouraged Alberta CAs to “Shaikh” what their designation gave them in support of Paying It Forward. Mike Shaikh FCA, member of the CAEF Board of Governors, offered not only his name, but his generous spirit, to this project by matching the donations of other Alberta CAs during a specified timeframe.

In September 2011, the Foundation held the Playing it Forward golf tournament at the McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary. Golfers had a great day on the course, followed by dinner and a silent auction. All proceeds from the event went towards the Paying It Forward campaign.
Most recently, the Foundation invited Alberta’s newest CAs to support the youth financial literacy project by participating in a customized photo session at the Edmonton and Calgary Graduation Balls. Grads had their photos taken and received on-the-spot copies with 100 per cent of the profits going towards Paying It Forward.
The financial literacy project has also been supported by a generous grant from the Government of Alberta's Community Spirit Grant Program.
Help us reach our goal! Donate to the Paying It Forward campaign today.

Now in its third year, the Foundation is hosting the Conference for Academics in Red Deer on May 4.The one-day conference is designed exclusively for accounting academics in Alberta and Saskatchewan. It will feature presentations on topics of interest to post-secondary accounting educators and provide an opportunity for post-secondary accounting educators to network with peers from other institutions. The theme of this year’s conference is Transition from the Classroom to the Boardroom. It provides a venue for connecting professionals who are leading in the classrooms with those who are leading in the boardrooms, with the overarching goal of supporting the quality of accounting and business education in Alberta.
In line with the Foundation’s current project to assist young Albertans in learning the basics of personal money management, the lunchtime topic will include a presentation, titled Financial Literacy and the Involvement of the Accounting Profession, featuring Ruth Kelly, President and CEO of Venture Publishing Inc. and a member of the Canadian Task Force on Financial Literacy. Financial literacy has become a hot topic across Canada and this timely presentation will focus on the recent report and recommendations published by the Canadian Task Force on Financial Literacy and on raising the awareness of the importance of financial literacy for Canadians.

New award available to Alberta post-secondary students for 2012.
In addition to its current roster of scholarships, bursaries and awards for students at Alberta post-secondary institutions, or at the University of Saskatchewan, students may also apply for a brand new award this year.
Through the CAEF, Michael Shackleton CA•CBV and Derek Boniecki CA•CBV – on behalf of Quadrant Accountants and Chartered Business Valuators – have created a new award for post-secondary students in Alberta: the Richard Schulli CA Memorial Scholarship. Remembering his friend and mentor, Michael says, “Rick was one of those guys who took a keen interest in younger CAs and articling students with whom he worked. He took the time to talk to them, take them for lunch and provide guidance and support throughout those difficult and challenging early years. He had a profound influence on many CAs who are successful today.”
The Richard Schulli CA Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to one student entering his or her third or fourth year of study pursuing an undergraduate business/commerce degree with a declared major in accounting. In memory of Richard Schulli’s passion for helping younger CAs, the award selection is based on student involvement in volunteer activities, preferably in a mentorship role.
The Foundation is currently offering the following three scholarships for students at any Alberta post-secondary institution or at the University of Saskatchewan:
James C Miller FCA Bursary in Accounting
Richard Schulli CA Memorial Scholarship
Don Wilson CA Memorial Scholarship
