Departments

The ICAA has a series of departments, each with its own specific tasks and objectives, in order to help the Institute reach its strategic goals. They are as follows:

Executive Office

The Executive Office includes the positions of CEO & Executive Director, Associate Executive Director, and Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs. The Executive Office is responsible for carrying out the strategic direction set by the ICAA Council, and oversees the work of all other areas.

Member Education

Member Education offers Professional Development throughout the province, providing members and other professionals with extensive learning opportunities on current business and financial issues and other pertinent information. We offer a variety of seminars, executive leadership programs, conferences, workshops, ELearning, self-study, and other professional development tools.

Practice Review

The objective of Practice Review is protection of the public by assessing the compliance with professional standards of firms and by taking appropriate follow-up or remedial action in instances of non-compliance. The public is further protected by Practice Review providing an educational experience to the firms. All 800+ firms are reviewed at least once during a three-year cycle by an approved practice reviewer to ensure firms maintain minimum professional standards.

Professional Standards

CAs are governed by RAPA and related guidelines-ethical principles established to protect the public and ensure orderly and courteous conduct within the profession. Professional Standards is responsible for investigating all complaints regarding members and students and for administering discipline as appropriate. CAs may request ethical ruling on proposed actions. Technical and advisory information services to members are also provided through this area.

Public Affairs & Communications

The Public Affairs & Communications department is largely responsible for communication with Alberta CAs and with the ICAA’s external stakeholders.

The department helps protect the public and ensure excellence and continued growth of Alberta CAs by coordinating timely, relevant and effective communications that keep Alberta CAs informed and current. These communications encompass print, digital and live activities, including the quarterly member magazine Spotlight, ICAA’s monthly electronic newsletter, LINK, and celebratory, educational and networking events. As well, the department conducts regular member surveys and research to ensure the needs of Alberta CAs are being met.

The department also coordinates external communications for the ICAA, including the media relations, corporate relations, government affairs, and career information portfolios. With a view to position CAs as the premier accountants and as preferred business leaders and advisors, the area focuses on issues and relationship management, while providing core vehicles in print, digital, and “live” mediums.

Registrations

Registrations is responsible for all aspects of member, public accounting firm, professional service provider, and professional corporation registration, as required by the Regulated Accounting Profession Act (RAPA). The objective of Registrations is protection of the public by ensuring registrant compliance with professional responsibilities and obligations and by taking appropriate follow-up or remedial action in instances of non-compliance.

Tribunals

Tribunals are quasi-judicial bodies comprised of CA volunteers and appointed public members. A Discipline Tribunal adjudicates allegations of unprofessional conduct, hears evidence, makes findings of guilt and innocence and imposes penalties. An Appeal Tribunal adjudicates appeals of decisions of Registration and Practice Review committees and Discipline Tribunals. The Tribunals area provides secretarial and logistical support and monitors compliance with orders.

Corporate Services

Corporate Services is comprised of five distinct areas: Accounting, Reception, Information Technology, Printing/Mailing Services, and Human Resources.
Accounting: Manages budget and finances, collects all dues and fees for members and students.
Reception: Provides reception and other support services.
Information Technology: Maintains internal systems and the website which includes e-commerce.
Printing/Mailing Services: provides printing and distribution services.
Human Resources: provides services related to ICAA staffing, including recruitment, development and performance management.

Professional Services

Professional Services is here to advise and assist all members in meeting their responsibilities to clients, employers and the public. The emphasis is on providing early, confidential advice and assistance for members/firms to consider in an effort to avoid more serious and costly problems such as litigation claims, legal costs, and complaints requiring disciplinary action. In addition, proactive efforts are done to inform members about current professional standards issuances and/or information regarding situations of interest to members.
